According to the first USA Today Coaches Poll, the Kentucky Wildcats are the No. 1 team in the nation:

1. Kentucky (16)
2. Michigan State (3)
3. Louisville (10)
4. Duke (3)
5. Arizona
6. Kansas
7. Syracuse
8. Florida
9. Michigan
10. Ohio State
11. North Carolina
12. Oklahoma State
13. Memphis
14. Gonzaga
15. Virginia Commonwealth
16. Wichita State
17. Marquette
18. Oregon
19. Connecticut
20. New Mexico
21. Wisconsin
22. Notre Dame
23. UCLA
24. Indiana
25. Virginia

And per USA Today Sports:

This marks the first time in the history of the USA TODAY Sports coaches’ poll, which began in the 1991-92 season, that a team enters a season No. 1 after finishing the previous season unranked.

Kentucky’s rise in the preseason poll represents the biggest jump in the history of the poll. Only twice before has a team outside the top 10 of the previous season started the season No. 1: Indiana (13th) last season and UConn (11th) to open the 2003-04 season. That UConn team went on to win the national title.

The Cats will play the No. 2, 3, 9 and 11 teams in the nation, making for one of the most challenging schedules a preseason No. 1 team has ever faced.
