Kentucky’s 2014 class in already ranked in the top 10 for 2014, and they only have commitments from Karl Towns, and Tyler Ulis. 247sports has them ranked #7 in the country, and they are in still in the mix with about 9 recruits that we know of in this latest class. I have heard people say this could be the year that Calipari doesn’t get the #1 class even though in 2012 ESPN ranked us #2 behind UCLA, but for the most part we were still according to every other major recruiting service.

I still believe Kentucky is in the lead for Devin Booker, and James Blackmon Jr. and could likely end up with both of them when this class is complete, but the most important recruit in this class for Kentucky is Stanley Johnson. Johnson is from Mater Dei High School (CA), and is ranked anywhere from #2 to #11 in the recruiting rankings.

Kentucky will end up with a great class because we are Kentucky, and we have the best recruiter in the history of college basketball in John Calipari, but as far as elite guys we may only have two at the most if we get Johnson. I personally think Karl Towns is elite, but most likely he will stay more than one year which would be GREAT news for Kentucky fans.

I saw a tweet tonight from Aaron Hall of rivals.com that Gary Mcknight who is the head coach of Mater Dei high school said that “Stanley will be our point guard this season.” Johnson stands at 6-7, and can do everything on the floor and now it looks like he will learn the point position before heading to college.

Stanley Johnson is the most versatile guy in the class of 2014, and that just proves my point. Calipari thrives for these kinds of players, and will likely have to work extra hard to get Johnson to the east coast, and steal him from Arizona.

I haven’t heard anything different from anybody with Johnson since Jason Jordan of USA Today said that “Arizona would be his pick right now, but the visit to Kentucky will mean everything.” If I hear anything different I will definitely be sure to tell you, but Stanley Johnson is the most important recruit in the Calipari era in my opinion.
