Last Friday night Kentucky Basketball got a commitment from 4 star PG Tyler Ulis to put the 2014 recruiting class at two as Ulis joins Karl Towns. Tyler Ulis is well known around the country as a pass first point guard, and somebody who is always thinking 3 plays ahead. Jason Jordan of USA today told me that “Tyler makes passes before anybody is even there because he knows the tendencies of his teammates.”
The reason I wanted to talk about the Ulis commitment is because I think it helps us with one of the most important players in the class of 2014 Stanley Johnson. Johnson is from Mater Dei high school in California so of course it will be tough to get him to the east coast, but Calipari has had his fair share of west coast guys in his career at Kentucky.
John Calipari had an in home visit with Johnson Friday night hours after Ulis committed, and Johnson’s AAU coach told rivals.com that “the addition of Ulis helps Kentucky, and Johnson was very excited when he found out that he committed to Kentucky; because he knows that Tyler is a pass first point guard.”
I have said since day one that Johnson would be the most important player in this whole class because of how versatile he is, and he has a motor that many compare to Michael Kidd-Gilchirst. I am hearing that Calipari was selling the Ulis commitment to Johnson, and the visit went very well.
Stanley Johnson isn’t close to a decision as of now, but he did cut his list today to five schools, and they are Kentucky, Arizona, USC, Florida, and Oregon. While he won’t tell anybody this, but the main schools in this recruitment will be Arizona, Kentucky, and USC as the dark horse.
