This upcoming week is important for the University of Kentucky football program as they prepare to play the University of Louisville on September 14th in the battle for the Governors’ Cup. But, what most people don’t know is that the day after the annual intrastate battle there is yet another important date for Kentucky football. Sunday, September 15th will mark the 40th anniversary of the first game ever played at Commonwealth Stadium. On September 15th, 1973, the Kentucky Wildcats defeated the Virginia Tech Hokies 31-26 in both the first game at Commonwealth Stadium and the first game for new head coach Fran Curci. Since then, there have been great players, great games, and great moments that have taken place in the home of Kentucky Wildcats football. Being the numbers guy that I am, I’ve decided to look back at the past 40 years of Commonwealth Stadium and present to everyone every fact, number, and record worth mentioning concerning the history of Commonwealth Stadium.
