John Calipari spoke at a SEC teleconference yesterday and said that the upcoming 2013-2014 team will resemble the 2009-2010 team. The 2009 team featured recruits such as John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, Eric Bledsoe, Daniel Orton, and Jon Hood. While the 2013 team will have the likes of Aaron Harrison, Andrew Harrison, Julius Randle, James Young, Derek Willis, Marcus Lee, Dominique Hawkins, and Dakari Johnson.
The 2009 team was highly talented and had a spectacular season until losing in the Elite Eight of the NCAA Tournament. Of course the 2013 team is similar in respect to talent and potential. Some think the 2013 recruiting class for the Cats is one of the most talented of all time, and the team is expected to be the frontrunner for a national title. However, the circumstances in which these two classes came in to make them even more alike. The 2009 class came to UK after the program just made an appearance in the National Invitational Tournament. That class also came to a team at UK that had multiple veterans to help teach and guide them. Although there only a couple veterans on the upcoming 2013-2014 team, these are the exact circumstances the 2013 recruiting class has come in to. The 2009 team was also very big and could physically dominate opponents. With the size of the 2013 class, they have potential to be just asphysically dominant.
If the 2013-2014 team will live up to all the hype and expectations remains to be seen. But if Calipari can bring together their talents and further develop them, it seems the sky is the limit.
