Shyquawn Pullium,  a defensive back for Blinn College in Texas, committed to the University of Kentucky football team on Sunday, becoming the 10th pledge of the 2014 class:

Pullium was originally a Penn State 2010 recruit out of Erie, Pennsylvania, by way of Cathedral Prep School. He’s a 3-star cornerback who previously held offers from Cincinnati, Maryland and Pittsburgh before eventually committing and signing with Penn State, but academics prevented Pullium from being able to attend PSU.

After committing to the Cats last night, Pulliam was gracious enough to give us an interview over the phone and let us know what led to his commitment to UK. Be sure to follow him on Twitter @ShyquawnP.

WBN: Talk about your journey from coming out of high school and expecting to go to Penn State, to your time at Blinn College?

It was all set for me to go to Penn State. I had signed my papers and was set to go there, and I had my opportunity, but it just didn’t work out. I sent out my highlight tape to Blinn college, and fortunately, they gave me the opportunity to play ball for them.

It’s been a good opportunity. It’s been a grind, and when you’re trying to get to the next level, you just have to keep grinding.

WBN: What positions have you played at Blinn, and how many year’s of eligibility will you have at UK?

My first year I got to play wide receiver and cornerback, but I only got onto the field at cornerback, and I’ll have two years to play at Kentucky.

WBN: When did Mark Stoops first contact you about potentially playing at Kentucky?

They just called me up last week and told me I have a lot of ability to do great things, and if they come there (UK), then they’ll make my abilities even better. We’ve been talking a lot, like what they’ll help me with, and how they’ll get me to the next level.

WBN: In the end, what schools did you pick Kentucky over, and what made Kentucky stand-out?

Arizona State and Cincinnati. I like the coaching. They’ve got great coaching on the whole staff. Mark Stoops has done great things at Florida State in getting his players to the NFL. That had a huge impact on my decision.

WBN: How have the UK coaches said they plan on using you in their 4-3 defense?

They said I’m fast, quick, and have good ball-skills, and that I can play all over the field, but they’ll be primarily using me at corner.

WBN: What kind of corner would you describe yourself as?

I like to jam. I like to pressure receivers the most. I like zone second because it allows me to drop back and see everything, but I like mostly jamming.

They (Stoops and D.J. Eliot) said they’re going to blitz a lot, so they’ll need me in man-coverage and hold down my zone.
