Kentucky Wildcats Basketball: Let's Meet the Local Commits at the Derby Festival Classic

Kentucky fans have already enjoyed the McDonalds All American Game and the Jordan Brand Classic. There is one more high school all star game of interest and there are a couple of Kentucky bound players involved as well as players committed to Louisville and Indiana. The Kentucky Derby Festival Classic is tonight at 7:00 PM at Freedom Hall in Louisville, Kentucky and will feature Derek Willis and Dominique Hawkins.

Kentucky has taken flack in the past from the founder of the event because of the lack of Kentucky recruits that have played in the game. The reason is that there is an NCAA rule in place that allows high school players to participate in only two all star games per year. Normally, the Wildcat recruits are playing in the McDonalds or Jordan game, leaving out the less prestigious Derby Festival Classic. And honestly, who can blame them? A five star high school recruit is going to play in the events where the competition is best and where they will get the most exposure.

I’m not taking anything away from the Derby Festival Classic. It is a great event and has showcased some big names in college basketball such as Russ Smith, Marcus Smart, Ben McLemore, Cody Zeller, Eric Bledsoe and Peyton Siva.

Let’s take a look at the bios of the local guys in tonight’s event.
