It was an early morning for Kentucky Wildcat fans as Madison Central’s Dominique Hawkins had an 8:00AM press conference to announce his college choice. In the end it was all worth it as Hawkins, the current Mr. Basketball for the Commonwealth of Kentucky picked the Wildcats. Hawkins is coming off a storybook season for Madison Central, which saw him winning the state championship at his future home, Rupp Arena. For the season, Hawkins, averaged 20.4 points, 5.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists.
Hawkins becomes the eight member of Kentucky’s top ranked 2013 recruiting class and his arrival is especially important since the announcement that Ryan Harrow is transferring to Georgia State. Hawkins is expected to provide PG depth behind Andrew Harrison and Jarrod Polson if Polson returns to Kentucky. The recruitment of Hawkins became one of the subplots of the Wildcats basketball season as it seems to have happened overnight. Kentucky was late in showing interest, but John Calipari made his interest known by taking in three games of the state basketball tournament.
It turns out that Hawkins was offered during that time, but could not make it public until now. Here is video of Hawkin’s commitment and his press conference. Thanks to Jason Marcum for being the early riser and getting it:
