The 2013 class will get another member on Wednesday. Dominique Hawkins is set to announce his college decision on Wednsday at 8 AM from Madison Central’s gym. The high school senior has been set to announce for Kentucky for a couple of weeks but he wanted to ensure that he had a scholarship offer from John Calipari.
Coach Cal and Orlando Antigua picked up their interest in the Kentucky Mr. Basketball finalist during his team’s run in the Sweet 16 at Rupp Arena. That run turned into a state title and Hawkins became a star. Calipari continued to visit with Hawkins to show his interest but also had to wait to see where some of his current players would decide to do.
Ryan Harrow is transferring to Georgia State and Archie Goodwin is leaving for the NBA, which opens the door for Hawkins. Calipari is still waiting on a decision from Andrew Wiggins but he has some wiggle room for Hawkins.
Hawkins will be vital as a back up for Andrew Harrison. With Harrow’s departure, the Wildcats were low on point guards. Although Jarrod Polson had a solid year as a back up with the ‘Cats it was clear that if Kentucky wants to enjoy success at the next level, then an elite point guard and a talented back up is essential. Hawkins provides the talented back up and could grow into a solid four year guy at Kentucky.
Hawkins has received offers from South Carolina, Western Kentucky, Morehead State and Tennessee Tech. He has received interest from Indiana and Illinois. Louisville offered him a preferred walk on role.
According to the Lexington Herald Leader, Butler’s Brad Stevens called to inquire about Hawkins but was told it’s too late and that he had already made his decision.
