UK Hoops advances to a rematch against UConn

Good morning, Big Blue Nation!

After knocking off Deleware, UK Hoops advanced to a rematch with UConn tomorrow night in the Elite 8 of the women’s basketball tournament. Matthew Mitchell’s squad won 69-62 against the Blue Hens, ending an impressive career for Elena Delle Donne. Delle Donne finished as the 5th best scorer all-time in women’s college basketball history with 3,039 points and she passed Cheryl Miller, Chamique Holdsclaw and Maya Moore yesterday afternoon. Jennifer O’Neill had 19 points while A’dia Mathies scored 16.

Despite big games from J.T. Riddle and A.J. Reed, UK Baseball lost to Georgia at home yesterday afternoon. The series is now even at 1 game a piece. The action starts tomorrow at 1 PM at Cliff Hagan Stadium, where the Cats will send junior LHP Corey Littrell (3-2, 2.56 ERA) to take the mound against Georgia senior RHP Bryan Benzor (1-1, 5.57 ERA). As is the usual case, you can listen to the game live on the UK IMG Network with Dick Gabriel behind the microphone (Neil Price is busy in Connecticut). Tune into WLAP 630-AM in Lexington, WKJK 1080-AM in Louisville, or the UK Athletics website.

The New York Mets have named former UK Baseball star Collin Cowgill as their starting center fielder for this season.

Cowgill, 26, was acquired from the Oakland Athletics on Dec. 18 for minor league third baseman Jefry Marte. He hit .303 in Grapefruit League play.

“He had a pretty good spring,” Collins said. “He hit righties as good as anybody. If it doesn’t work out, we’ve got Kirk there. So we’ve got some options.”

At the moment, Alex Meyer has been assigned to play this season for the Fort Myers Miracle.

Another former Cat, Chris Rusin, will likely be starting this season with the Iowa Cubs after being re-assigned to the minor league camp.

While no former Cats are on the Lexington Legends roster, there might not be any former Cats that stop by Lexington during the season to take on the Legends.
