Matthew Mitchell and his #2 seeded Kentucky Wildcats entered the day with an opportunity to make a repeat trip to the Elite Eight, while the Delaware Fightin’ Blue Hens were looking to continue their magical NCAA Tournament run led by star senior Elena Delle Donne.

Delaware had won 27 in a row entering the game, but big games from A’dia Mathies and Jennifer O’Neill helped UK hold off a late Delaware rally to help the Cats secure a 69-62 victory, and advance UK to it’s third Elite Eight in the past four seasons.

Mathies & O’Neill combined for 37 of UK’s 69 points.

Elena Delle Donne led Delaware with 33 points, and became just the third women’s player to ever reach the 3,000 career point plateau.

Prior to Matthew Mitchell’s arrival at UK, the Cats had just 4 NCAA tournament wins in their history, and will now be looking to advance to the school’s first Final 4 as the await the winner of tonight’s Maryland-UCONN matchup.

Congratulations to the Lady Cats and their rise to the upper-class of NCAA Women’s Basketball.
