Tonight the #2 seed Kentucky Wildcats faced the #7 seed Dayton Flyers in the second round of the NCAA Women’s Tournament. Both teams got off to a quick start as Kentucky’s first six points were scored by Denesha Stallworth and Dayton made their first six shots. Then Kentucky began playing more aggressively and forced Dayton into committing several turnovers. The turnovers enabled Kentucky to score easy transition points and build a double-digit lead. At halftime, Andrea Hoover led Dayton with 13 points and A’dia Mathies led Kentucky with 15 points.
To start the second half, both teams played the opposite of how they did in the first half. Dayton pressured Kentucky and cut into their lead by scoring on turnovers. Kentucky was able to weather the storm though and rebuild a double-digit lead. Kentucky’s victory was due large in part to Mathies who had 34 points. That equals a career high for Mathies and was a surprising performance after she didn’t make a field goal in the win over Navy on Sunday. There were also three other players for Kentucky that scored in double-digits. Dayton’s Andrea Hoover scored 22 points and three other Flyers scored in double-digits as well.
Kentucky advances to the third round of the tournament and will play #6 seeded Delaware on March 30th.
