This weekend has been one of the worst weekends in Kentucky basketball history in my opinion, and it all started on Friday when Vanderbilt knocked us out the SEC tournament, and the NCAA tournament all at once. Today it got worse when the brackets were announced, and although Kentucky got an overall #1 seed it was in the NIT. Hopefully this week will be better as we have Julius Randle annoucing his college choice Wednesday at 1 on ESPNU. I will give you the list of his final four schools, and who I think will land the #2 player in the class of 2013.
Julius announced about two weeks ago that he was no longer considering NC state or Oklahoma anymore, but that wasn’t a big shock to anybody as niether of them schools were considered a favorite for the big guy. Randle’s list will include Texas, Florida, Kentucky, and Kansas, but I think it comes down to Kansas, and Kentucky.
Randle took his visit to Kentucky on the weekend of September 15th, and saw the alumni game wo had Drake coaching one of the teams. 15,000 showed up for the event, and the fans let Randle know how much they wanted him. I was in the crowd, and I was apart of the crowd chanting his name. He took notice of the cheer and smiled ear to ear. Lets not forget how much Drake made an impression on Randle as he is his favorite rapper. After the visit though the trail went cold, and Evan Daniels thought Randle was leaning more towards Texas, and Florida rather than Kentucky.
I think the turning point for Kentucky was when Randle broke his foot earlier in the season, and Calipari was non stop checking on Randle, and giving him words of advice to get through the injury. I think that showed Randle how much Calipari truly cares about him even when he’s not healthy.
Julius Randle last visit was to Kansas, and he said the fans there were the loudest he has ever heard. Like Kentucky, Kansas fans know basketball, and everything to do with the basketball program. Kansas made a great impression on Randle during the visit, but like the other top recruits who are still on the board he is very tight lipped.
My Prediction is that Kentucky will land the #2 player in the nation on Wednesday, and it will ease some of the pain left by this years squad. If Kentucky does land Randle it will be without a doubt the best class ever put together in the history of college basketball.
Julius Randle will make his decision on Wednesday March 20th, and it will be covered by ESPNU. Randle is supposed to announce at 1 EST.
Here is a video of Julius Randle taking on another Kentucky recruit, and #1 player in the 2013 class Andrew Wiggins.
