Just When I Thought I Was Out…

“Just when I thought I was out… they pull me back in.”

Michael Corleone, The Godfather Part III

Every time I’m just about to write this University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball team off, they totally go out and redeem themselves.  In the two games they had to have, Missouri and at home against Florida, the Cats did what it to pull out much needed wins. And with today’s win over the Gators, the Cats provided the type of performance that could launch them into the NCAA Tournament and erase a season’s worth of disappointment.

There’s no need to rehash some of the missteps the team has had.  The regular season is over. These Wildcats have a chance to  rewrite the ending to their season that most had already penned after the loss at Georgia.  These Cats have a chance to make people forget about the losses and disappointments and leave a legacy behind. To let everyone know that it’s never too late to finally “get it.” Yes, these Cats have a chance. They have a chance to win the SEC tournament and make another deep tournament run. Sometimes, all you need is a chance.

I’ve wavered this season.  I’ve turned off a few games. I’ve thrown up my hands in disgust. I’m questioned Alex’s heart. I’ve questioned Ryan’s toughness.  I’ve wondered why Jarrod Polson has logged so many minutes and Jon Hood so few. I’ve shaken my head at Archie’s decision-making. By my own estimation, I’ve been a pretty bad fan at times.  But right now, this team needs fans… great fans… So it’s quite fortunate that the Big Blue has the best fans in the country.

I’m not giving up on these kids and neither should you.  Because every time I do, the Wildcats find a way to pull me back in.
