Wildcat Blue Nation Top 25: The Gonzaga Bulldogs take over the #1 spot

Every week it seems like we have a #1 team in the nation, and this week is no different. Indiana was defeated 77-73 on the road at Minnesota on Tuesday after Trevor Mbakwe scored 21 points, and grabbed 12 rebounds to help Minnesota pull off the upset. Cody Zeller is most likely a top 5 pick in this years upcoming draft, but Mbakwe was too much for the all-American big man.

The new #1 team in the nation this week is the Gonzaga Bulldogs, who have a nations best record at 28-2. Mark Few has had some really good team, but this may be his best yet. Freshman big man Kelly Olynyk and senior Elias Harris are a dynamic duo for the Bulldogs, and give Gonzaga and NBA front court. Gonzaga was tested earlier this week, but managed to do what most teams can’t, and this is win on the road in conference play. Gonzaga defeated BYU 70-65 behind 19 from Kelly Olynyk. The Bulldogs will most likely be #1 to end the season, and a #1 seed going into the NCAA tournament.

A team that is surging right now is the Georgetown Hoyas. They have a game lead over Louisville in the Big East standings, and have Villinova coming up, and if they win that the Hoyas will be crowned Big East regular season champs. Otto Porter may be the best player in the nation, and should be in consideration for player of the year. The Hoyas have now moved up into the top 5 this week after a gritty win over Rutgers on Saturday. Otto Porter Jr. scored 28 of their 64 points in that meeting, and is the go to guy down the stretch.

A team that is not hitting stride last in the season is Syracuse. After some thought they would get a #1 or #2 seed in the tourney a couple weeks ago, they have lost two straight at home to Georgetown, and Louisville. Some are saying they may be playing their way into a dreaded 6 seed in the NCAA tournament. Most thought with James Southerland back they would make a run for the title, but they actually are playing worst with him back into the lineup.
