We all have that one moment where your favorite team or player does something truly amazing; that moment where you will always remember exactly where you were and what you were doing when you witnessed greatness. Today, I was thinking about my favorite sports moments were, especially Kentucky basketball as I was talking about UL and ND going into five overtimes (FIVE!). Aside from the national title, because hands down that’s my favorite, I decided another top Kentucky basketball moment for me was January 13, 2009.
Sitting on my couch in my living room after a cross-country practice I remember my jaw hitting the floor as Jodie Meeks dropped fifty-four points to take down the Tennessee Volunteers 90-72. Meeks was always one of my favorite Cats anyway but after that night he was definitely in my top 10. Meeks put the shooting in shooting guard that night in Knoxville.
For those who don’t know, I’m also a huge Lakers fan and every time I see Meeks take the floor wearing the purple and gold I have flashbacks to him in that Kentucky uniform obliterating Bruce Pearl’s defense.
That night Meeks broke Dan Issel’s single-game scoring record from the 1969-70 season of 53 points. Meeks had scored 46 that same season against App State- but to break a record of a legend like Issel on the road in conference play is quite a feat- writing this now I’m still impressed with it. That night he also had 8 rebounds, 4 assists and 1 steal. He made 10 3-pointers that night and went 100% from the free throw line. I still like wearing my shirt with the box score on it.
Aside from the fact that I love seeing athletes have incredible and inconceivable performances, especially my favorite athletes, I also LOVE seeing Tennessee lose, especially to my Cats. When Jodie Meeks decided to go off that night in Thompson-Boling I was ecstatic to say the least. I remember jumping around and yelling and I just kept talking about how there is no way he can keep scoring that much- it was hard for me to believe, that’s why the Jodie Meeks 54-point performance will go down as one of my all time favorite sports moments.
