Kentucky took on Auburn about four weeks ago, and won the game by 22 on the road, but this Auburn team has gotten a lot better. In the 1st meeting Auburn shot 0-15 from 3 point land, but in the 1st half of today’s game they hit 6, including 3 from Noel Johnson.
Jarrod Polson and Willie Cauley- Stein came off the bench to give Kentucky some energy, and extended the lead to 9 under the 4 minute timeout. Auburn would respond and go into the half only trailing 37-31. Kentucky was led in scoring by Kyle Wiltjer who had 7 points. Nerlens Noel didn’t score but 3 points in the 1st half, but was a force on the defensive end with 8 rebounds and many altered shots.
Auburn was led in scoring by Noel Johnson with 9 points all of them coming from behind the arc.
This game has been very chippy from the tip, and it continued into the second half. Auburn had a player ejected in the 1st half for throwing a punch at Archie Goodwin after a free throw attempt, and Frankie Sullivan was called for a intentional foul midway through the second half. Kentucky has extended the lead 47-38 with 13 minutes left in the game.
Auburn played Kentucky very tough for about 30 minutes of the game, but the talent that Kentucky has started taking over. Kentucky went into the final TV timeout with lead of 68-52, after Willie Cauley-Stein and Nerlens Noel started to carve up the smaller Auburn frontcourt.
Kentucky defeats the Auburn Tigers in Rupp Arena with a score of 72-62. Kyle Wiltjer led all scorers for Kentucky with 14 points, but the Wildcats had 5 players in double figures. Auburn was led by Noel Johnson with 12.
Kentucky will be back in action on Tuesday when they travel to take on the Florida Gators.
