Name: Reese Phillips
Hometown: Signal Mountain, Tennessee
Weight: 215 lbs.
Phillips has not only committed to Kentucky, he actually already signed and enrolled so he wont be coming through the wire today. Regardless, we’ll give him his due as well. Phillips was an under-the-radar guy that Former OC/QBs coach Randy Sanders found in the Chattanooga area of Tennessee. His high school ran the Wing-T offense, which really never gave him the opportunity to show what he could do. For those not familiar with the Wing-T, it’s actually almost the same exact offense as the “Wildcat.” As you might imagine, the three-back, one-receiver set doesn’t exactly lend itself to showing off quarterbacks. Despite this, Phillips caught the eye of the former staff and they extended an offer. When the coaching change occurred, Phillips decided to honor his commitment and Coach Stoops Staff was happy to bring him in. Phillips will have an advantage over the rest of his freshman class as he was the lone early enrollee. As such, he’ll be able to go through spring practices and compete with the other quarterbacks. With Smith, Towles, and Whitlow all returning, Phillips is likely still headed for a redshirt season as he adjusts to the differences between his high school scheme and new OC Neal Brown’s. Phillips chose Kentucky over local programs Memphis and Middle Tennessee State, and significant interest from Mississippi State.
