WBN College Basketball Top 25: Syracuse Orange move into top 5 with win at Louisville Cardinals

Coming into the week Louisville had taken over the #1 spot, but had a tough week ahead as they traveled to Hartford, Connecticut to take the UCONN, and then on Saturday they hosted #6 Syracuse. Louisville trailed at halftime of the UCONN game, Russ Smith was to much for the huskies as Louisville rolled past UCONN 73-58. Syracuse came into the YUM center on Saturday short handed without leading 3 point shooter James Southerland(Eligibilty issues), but beat Louisville after a very good 2nd half performance from freshman point guard Michael Carter-Williams. Carter Williams struggled mightly in the 1st half with Louisville’s defense, but calmed himself and hit a huge 3 pointer, and a steal and dunk to give Syracuse the lead with 19 seconds left in the game. Syracuse upset the #1 ranked Cardinals at home 70-68 behind 23 points from Brandon Triche.

Another top 10 matchup took place on Thursday when Michigan went on the road to take on Minnesota. Michigan came out of the gate hot as they were up at one point in the 1st half by 14 points. Minnesota likes always answered and cut the lead to 36-30 going into the 2nd half. Michigan then had another great run in the second half, and extended the lead to 20 points. Tim Hardaway Jr. led the way for Michigan with 21 points. The Wolverines defeated Minnesota 83-75, and look to be the best team in the nation.

Maybe the most epic game of the weekend was Butler vs Gonzaga. Both of these teams are great, and should be able to make a serious run come March. Brad Stevens is an amazing coach, and never gets to high or low in emotions. His players are the same way no matter if they are down 10 or up 10 they play their hearts out the whole game. Gonzaga had a horrible inbounds pass, and Butler’s Roosevelt Jones picked it off, and hit the game winning floater with no time remaining. Jones endeed the game with 20 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assist. Rotnei Clarke didn’t play against Gonzaga because of a neck injury suffered a week ago. He should return to the lineup against Temple in a A-10 showdown in about a week. Butler defeated Gonzaga 64-63.
