Wildcat Blue Nation Top 25: Butler Knocks Indiana From Number One Ranking

This was finals week for most colleges around the nation so the games were limited during the week; although Saturday was full of great matchups of some top 10 teams.

Indiana was coming into the week as number 1 in most every major poll, and getting most of the votes but none of that mattered to Butler. Butler came in as a double digit underdog as they took on the Hoosiers Saturday. The most impactful transfer of the season may be Rotnei Clarke who decided to leave Arkansas when new coach Mike Anderson came in. He is a big time shooter(#1 in Jeff Goodman’s top 50 list of shooters) and didn’t dissappoint on Saturday. Rotnei went for a team high 19 points, and hit a huge 3 point shot in overtime as it looked like Indiana may pull away. A couple things I noticed while watching the game were 1. Brad Stevens is a big time coach, and will be coaching at a big time school if he wants it 2. Indiana got out worked by the Butler kids from the start of the game 3. Brad Stevens out coached Tom Crean down the stretch as Butler pulled off the upset with 2 players fouled out and lastly Cody Zeller is all hype as far as being selected number 1 in next years NBA draft. He should have dominated that game, but Butler took it right to him, and he didn’t respond late in the game. Butler defeated Indiana 88-86.

Another top 10 matchup took place late Saturday night as Flordia was on the road to take on the Arizona Wildcats. Florida is a very good team, but the lack of a true point guard will hurt them down the stretch, and hurt them late in this game. Florida was up 6 with 1 minute left in the game and had control of the ball. Arizona forced them into 2 turnovers during that time span and scored off Florida’s TO’s. Arizona is a team that could win the title this year. Soloman Hill and Mark Lyons are a great 1-2 punch, and with the leadership of Nick Johnson this team can make some noise in March. Arizona defeated Florida 65-64 behind 18 points from All-American Soloman Hill.

A game to watch for this week happens tonight as Detroit goes on the road to take on Syracuse. Both teams are 9-0 and Detroit has the firepower behind Ray McCallum to pull off the upset, and put a pause on the 900th win for Coach Jim Boeheim.
