There’s a basketball game on between the Kentucky Wildcats and Notre Dame Fighting Irish on ESPN2 in a few hours but my mind is, strangely, on Kentucky football. It’s almost December and this feeling is not normal.
We know for sure that Mark Stoops has been announced as the next head coach of the Kentucky Wildcats football team. What we do not know for sure are who is coming with him to join the staff.
According to FootballScoop.com, Coach Stoops would like to bring on D.J. Eliot, the Florida State defensive ends coach, as a defensive coordinator. Of course, it’s possible that FSU coach Jimbo Fisher would like to promote him as well. Noles247.com’s Josh Newberg believes that Eliot is will be offered the job at Kentucky. Newberg tells me that if Eliot is offered the job, he does not think that he would turn it down. As of now, Eliot is the front runner.
Pete Roussel is reporting that former Northwestern State head coach Bradley Dale Peveto is in position to join Stoops’ staff. Roussel says: “No word yet on the position, but Peveto has a background of coordinating special teams.”
FSU offensive coordinator James Coley has been offered the same job at Kentucky. The current reports are that he will join the staff as offensive coordinator.
From a recruiting standpoint, luring Coley to Kentucky is huge. What kind of effect will it have on Kentucky’s recruiting and being able to pick up the big names? For that, I spoke to Brandon Huffman, a National College Football Recruiting Analyst for Scout.com.
“I think it will certainly help, not just in the Southeast, but Stoops’ name in the Midwest and the Midlands will also pay huge dividends,” Huffman said. “Really, this is as good a head coach-offensive coordinator combo that Kentucky could have asked for, and Stoops’ brothers were both excellent recruiters as head coach and he’s learned well from being a big recruiter when he was on Mike’s staff at Arizona.”
As far as the SEC East goes in football, UK might be making major in-roads depending on who Stoops brings in. Recruit Kentucky tweeted today that some FSU recruits are reconsidering.
