From the day that UK Athletics announced Joker Phillips would not return as the University of Kentucky head football coach, there had been a “#PackCommonwealth” movement in the cyber world. BBN was determined to send the seniors and Joker off on a positive note. The football team had the same vision, to send their coach and seniors out with a win, and they did just that. The Cats defeated the Samford Bulldogs 34-3 and seniors Max Smith and Larry Warford carried Joker off the field, marking the third straight senior night victory.
The students showed up to watch the Cats defeat Samford and it was defiantly heard. When the students cheer, the entire stadium follows in suit. For several weeks the student section has had maybe a few rows filled, and although it wasn’t full this week, there was a substantial number of students.
Kentucky’s final game is against (also coach-less) Tennessee. The team we all love to hate. Typically on UK’s campus the week leading up to the UT game (same with UL) is dubbed “Tennessee Hate Week” and I don’t see this week being any exception- look out Twitter world, we’re coming for you.
With the students fired up for the final game of the season, the players have also taken to Twitter to say they’re ready to go too. Could the Cats get back-to-back wins over Tennessee? I couldn’t think of a better way to send the seniors and Joker out than a victory over the Vols in Neyland Stadium.
I really think that the fans that came out to Commonwealth and cheered on UK this weekend have lit a fire within the team and coaching staff, I hope that this spirit carries over into the week leading up to Tennessee. Bad fans won’t impress prospective players or coaches, change is coming and the fans can influence it. So happy #TennesseeHateWeek everyone & remember not to wear orange!
