During Tuesday night’s men’s basketball game between the University of Kentucky Wildcats and the Duke University Blue Devils, I came across and interesting topic on Twitter: Is Duke a rival? And, more importantly, what makes a rival? With the Indiana University series on a hiatus, who are the teams that you love to beat?
Here are my top five teams that I love to hate:
5. Florida. First off, Florida is a football school that found itself incredibly lucky winning back to back basketball titles. And because of that once in a lifetime occurrence, a few of the Gator faithful thought that somehow made them equal to Kentucky in basketball. And… nope. Not one bit. But why are they on this list? Matt Walsh. Teddy Dupay. Joakim Noah. And, for my money, the number one reason: Billy Donovan. I can understand turning down the UK head job once, but twice? Here’s the thing, Billy D, we make coaches in Lexington, not the other way around. Besides, if your team was that great, wouldn’t you sell out your home games?
4. Tennessee. It’s got to be the color, right? Who in their right mind goes with creamsicle orange as their dominant color? And what, exactly, is Tennessee volunteering to do? I just don’t get it. I’m old school, so my UT hate started with Ron Slay. Whenever the two schools met during his 8 year run in Knoxville, he was always in the mix with a borderline cheap shot. Also, Bruce Pearl. Some people liked the excitement he brought to Volunteer land and how he infused the rivalry with Kentucky. To quote Omar from The Wire, “If you shoot at the king, you best not miss.” And, Bruce, you missed. (Honestly, this Alabama Fan covers everything you need to know about UT right here)
