Kentucky Wildcats Basketball: Defense Is Key in 74-28 win over Transylvania

Well, that was a tale of two halfs for the Kentucky Wildcats. The first half was very sloppy and there wasn’t much communication for the wildcats. They had 10 turnovers and most of them weren’t forced by Transy. You could tell that Kentucky was over thinking the game in my opinion. Kyle Wjilter disappointed me tonight, he was making his three point shot and when he doesn’t do that you really cant keep him on the floor, because his defense is horrible at the moment.

In the second half I was very impressed with this Kentucky team. They came out with so much energy and it showed at the defensive end of the floor. Kentucky only allowed 10 points the whole second half, and I was very happy about that as any fan should, no matter what level the competition is. 10 points in 20 minutes in incredible to me. I loved the hustle I saw from the Big guys down low, Nerlens Noel was a force in the second half, and almost took over the role as a leader in the second half. Willie Cauley-Stein was diving on the floor, making passes to open shooters, and rebounding over defenders. That kid will be something special by the end of the year.

I hear fans say that Willie is farther along than Nerlens, but in my opinion Nerlens is becoming a force and we are all seeing the talent he has. You guys have to remember that Nerlens didn’t get on campus until August. Nerlens Noel will be the number 1 pick in the NBA draft and he is starting to show that.

The real story of the night was the play of Julius Mays, the transfer from Wright state. He was huge for Kentucky as they expanded the lead out to 40 points. He hit 4 3 pointers on the night, but at the 6 minute mark he went down with what looked like was a knee injury. Luckily, UK came out with a statement saying it was only a right leg strain, and he is day to day. Julius was on the bench smiling at the end of the game, so that was a great sign, because he will be HUGE for this years team.

This Kentucky team is VERY talented and when all the little things come together this team will be scary. Maryland will give them a good challenge and we will see how tough this team is. I think the key matchup for that game will be Alex Poythress. He needs to become a man like he is and take over games, he can be an absolute monster in the paint. I am very excited about this years team, and Kentucky fans please stop comparing this years team to last years, its not fair.

Kentucky will tip off againist Maryland on Friday at 9 on ESPN. GO CATS!!!!!!!
