A wave of relief can wash over the Kentucky football fans today. In a statement released HERE, UK athletics director Mitch Barnhart announced that Joker Phillips will not return next season and the search for a new head coach will begin immediately.

If you listen to the podcasts, you will hear all of the reasons why this was the right move tomorrow morning. If you don’t listen to the podcasts, download and listen to the one we’ll publish on the site tomorrow. James, Darren, and myself have a very brutal conversation about the state of the program. It’s certainly worth your attention for 30-60 minutes.

The bottom line is, that this was the right decision for everyone involved. The writing was on the wall and it has become obvious that the staff, the players, and the fans have all quit on the Kentucky Football program. A change was not only necessary, it was the only humane thing to do.

Now the endless discussion will begin about who Kentucky’s new coach will be. While that is a discussion we will surely have in the near future, I think it’s safe to say Randy Sanders and Rick Minter won’t be candidates.
