Brian Long started his time at Kentucky as a practice player who made the squad as a walk-on at the start of last season, alongside fellow walk-on freshman Sam Malone. Brian Long played in only 12 games last season, always late in blow out games. Before his time at UK, Brian Long attended River Dell High School where he averaged 9.6 points and 5 assists per game, while leading his team to the state playoffs in his senior season. Long was named First Team All-Conference Big North and Honorable Mention All-County for Bergen County as a senior as well. As a junior he 9 points and 4 assists per game, being named Second Team All-League for the Bergen County Scholastic League. Long comes from a basketball family as his dad played basketball for Creighton, his brother, Keith, played for UNLV and his other brother, Travis, played at Memphis.
Brian Long will probably see about the same amount of playing time this season as he did last season due to the sheer abundance of talent this Kentucky Wildcats team has, once again. However, this season will be different for Long as he has worked from a walk-on player, to earn a scholarship this season. Regardless of whether or not plays very much, it has got to be nice to be able to practice and suit up with this team every day, and to have your school payed for in the process.
Coach Cal likes the energy and work ethic that Long brings to the team in practice. Most of the time, a player like long is used to practice to simulate some of the opposing teams’ styles of play so that the starters can be better off in the next game. Coach Cal had this to say about sophomore Brian Long:
Brian is a great teammate who has become an instrumental piece. His work ethic and attitude earned him a scholarship this season, and we will continue to look to him to make us a better team. We need that type of mindset to get better every day in practice.
Look for Brian Long to continue to work hard this season and hopefully he is able to see some quality playing time at some point in the season. We all know that hard work can go a long way in the Coach Cal system.
