In typical Calipari fashion, Big Blue Madness was once again a huge production. BBN, especially students, created a kind of hype that could only be done at Kentucky. Rupp was rockin’ as the fans got to see the 2012-2013 Cats take the court for the first time.
Some fan favorites of the night include women’s head coach Matthew Mitchell doing an MC Hammer tribute- parachute pants and all. The women’s team doing a surprise dance, the cheerleader’s routine and the dance team’s hip hop dance featuring the Wildcat himself. The men’s team never seems to disappoint in the dance department- each having their own song and dance to come out to. Calipari said, “I don’t know about basketball, but we sure have dance moves.”
One of the most Kentucky-esque moments of the night was when Cal invited the former Cats back onto the court and gave each an introduction. Among the returning Cats were Kyle Macy, Wah Wah Jones, Ron Mercer, and Coach Joe B Hall. Coach Cal talked about all the national titles won at Kentucky and pointed out the banners. They then lowered all 8 national championship banners and had the former Cats re-raise them themselves.
One of the most innovative things would have to be the transformation of the court into a screen to show highlights, video and photos of players.
