Jalen Whitlow takes over at quarterback

Aside from the second half last night, the most impressive thing to come out of it was what Jalen Whitlow did as quarterback. Whitlow entered almost immediately after the game started but what fans saw from him in the first half alone was impressive. Relieving the injured Smith, Whitlow was 12 of 23 for 114 yards on passing.

After the game, Coach Joker Phillips addressed the press. As far as Maxwell Smith’s ankle goes, Phillips said: “X-rays are negative, but we’ll take another look at it tomorrow.” As for Whitlow, the trainers never addressed his ankle with Coach Phillips.

Lexington Herald-Leader columnist Mark Story views the Wildcat football team as having a “glass half full with Whitlow at controls.” For those of us who watched the game and followed the tweets as well as it was happening, Story’s last sentence rings true: “But, at least for a half, Jalen Whitlow put the thrill back into Kentucky football.”

Former Kentucky coach Rich Brooks summed up the first drive of the game by the Gamecocks rather accurately in a series of tweets on Saturday night. While Coach Brooks might no longer be roaming the sidelines, he does keep an eye on what the Wildcats are doing on the gridiron.
