The Kentucky Wildcats voted on their captains for the season, and Collins Ukwu and Matt Smith took the honors.

Ukwu is a senior defensive end. He recorded 28 tackles and 2.5 sacks in eight games last season. He missed six full games due to an injury in 2011. Ukwu is looking to improve his numbers and stay healthy this year in order to be the leader on the defensive line, which may be the teams’ best and deepest unit.

Matt Smith is also a senior and is a two year starter at the center position. He is the brains behind the offensive line. Last season Smith sat out the first two games with an ankle injury and his absence hurt the Wildcats. This year he will be at full strength and readiness heading into the Louisville game.

Speaking of the Louisville game, Larry Warford and Martavius Neloms were named as co-captains for the season opener. There will be a rotating  squad of captains all season long. Smith and Ukwu are the only players that are permanent captains.
