IF there is one thing that John Calipari has tried to do at the University of Kentucky, it has been to try and spread the love to the other programs. Calipari has talked about his desire to have a basketball/women’s hoops/football weekend during his time at Kentucky and by golly, I think he may just pull it off.
We all know that next year the mens and women’s basketball team will face the Baylor Bears at Texas Stadium. And for this season, Calipari has just announced plans for a UK basketball alumni game to be held at Rupp Arena on September 15. The game at Rupp Arena is scheduled for 2:00 PM and will be done in plenty of time for the Kentucky/Western Kentucky football game at 7:00PM at Commonwealth Stadium.
This news comes less than 24 hours after the news that Kentucky will play in an Elite Nike basketball Tournament in 2017 that will feature 16 top programs spread out over four days. It is apparent that Calipari is the master of thinking big and these recent developments prove that. Despite the big ideas, Cal has proven to be a real “man of the people” in his time at Kentucky.
Need further proof of that? Today, Calipari flew out to West Liberty, Kentucky to take part in a benefit for victims of the March tornadoes. Cal ponied up $25,000 out of his own pocket to match donations made over the radio. I am sure other coaches at other schools do this as well, but Calipari has a knack of drawing attention to his causes with flair.
