Anthony Davis’s gold medal was barely home in his trophy case when the news leaked about a proposed “three on three” basketball event for the 2016 US Olympics.  Could it be true that the sport of driveways and cul de sacs everywhere was headed to the Olympics?  Seems like FIBA, one of the top organizations for basketball  really wants this to happen … and soon:

Secretary-general Patrick Baumann said Saturday that his group planned to propose it to be played as early as the 2016 Rio Games.

Three-on-three, the game played in driveways, on playgrounds and around the country during the annual Gus Macker tournaments, debuted in the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. FIBA wants to create a comprehensive ranking system that would determine the best three-on-three teams in the world. FIBA already has a three-on-three world tour and world championship, but Baumann welcomed all three-on-three tournaments, such as Gus Macker and Hoop It Up, into the fold as long as those tournaments adhered to FIBA rules, including the registration of players in a database to chart wins and losses.

“Like volleyball has beach volleyball, swimming has synchronized swimming, we want three-on-three to be part of it,” Baumann said.

Of course, there are a whole lot of semantics to deal with, and whether it will be limited to pros or could amateurs participate.  But this is a fantastic idea.  There is a lot of buzz that the team of LeBron James, DeWayne Wade, and Kevin Durant (pictured above) would be the best in the world.  I can’t deny that, but with 20-something former Wildcats still in the pros, I think we could have quite a three-on three tournament with just the former Wildcats.

And if anyone with the UKAA or the Kentucky Basketball Office sees that (and this means you too, Cal, who scans us on his Ipad while on the treadmill) … MAKE THIS HAPPEN for BBM!

Seriously.  We have enought former Wildcats that come to Big Blue Madness, so let’s put them to work !  Here are just a few “dream teams” that I have come up with. Some of these will win quite a few games. Some sadly, will never happen.

TEAM BALANCED
John Wall, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist

I think this could be the best overall team as Davis and MKG will be matchup problems with anyone and Wall will be sick in getting the ball to these two.

TEAM TITLE
Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd- Gilchrist, Doron Lamb

This team will give Team Balanced a run for their money. I like having Lamb as he is a better scorer and can also be a pretty good PG to dish the ball to MKG and Davis.

TEAM WELCOME TO THE CALI-PARTY
John Wall, DeMarcus Cousins, and Eric Bledsoe

John Calipari’s first number one recruiting class at Kentucky has to have an entry here. It would be great to see these three together again.
