Steve Jones of Cats Illustrated is reporting that the Kentucky football team has picked up a commitment from Jevontey Smith, a wide receiver out of Alabama. Smith is a 6-foot, 181-pound prospect from Greensboro, Alabama. He held an offer from Middle Tennessee state, but was receiving significant interest from Tennessee and Auburn. He was a highly regard athlete that can play both receiver and defensive back very well, and was also a very good return man. Scout.com and 247sports are the only services to evaluate him, and they gave him a two-star grade, but as they get better evaluations, he’s expected to be bumped to a high-two star or even three-star.
In 2010, he had 18 receptions for 248 yards and four touchdowns, while also tallying 14 carries for 116 yards. He recorded 24 tackles, three interceptions, five pass break ups and a touchdown playing defensive-back on defense. He added three kickoff returns for 164 yards and a touchdown.
In 2011, Smith had 31 receptions for 623 yards on a 20.10 ypc average and five TDs. He also had 34 carries for 263 yards and two scores. ON defense, he tallied 77 tackles, two interceptions, and nine pass defenses. Smith continued to show his abilities as a return threat, accounting for 14 returns and 398 yards with a 28.43 return average.
He is UK’s first wide receiver commitment for the Class of 2013, and the 10th overall player to commit to Kentucky. With 2013 expected to be a small class due to UK’s scholarship numbers, for Joker to take Smith’s commitment now means he is another one of his classic “diamond in the rough” prospects, who will likely see his rankings and offers from other BCS schools pick up soon. Both Auburn and Tennessee are evaluating him and offers may soon be coming.
Smith participated in the 2011 Under Armour Combine. Here are his measurables:
