Last season Kentucky needed some sure-handed receivers and while they are surely working on-campus, Joker Phillips & Co. went out and signed a couple. The 2nd to commit was Floridian AJ Legree who committed right before Christmas last year. It appears to have been a nice present for new coach Pat Washing ton. It isn’t common for Sunshine State-ers to elect to move to the Bluegrass.
Legree caught 47 passes for 698 yards as senior, scoring 10 times. On defense he recorded 107 tackles and picked off 6 passes. A consensus 3-star prospect via the major recruiting websites, Legree chose Kentucky over South Florida, Iowa State, Western Kentucky and Miami among others. He is a big-bodied kid who looks to become an outside receiver at UK. As a junior he was named Male Track Athlete of the Year after taking state in the high jump.
On film Legree appears to have good hands and body control. He goes up and gets the ball at it’s highest point. Obviously he possesses jumping ability from his track accomplishments. He sometimes appears similar to former Rutgers WR Mohammed Sanu as a possession receiver who has the size to play outside but the sure hands to play the slot when called upon. It’s generally a good idea for frosh wideouts to redshirt and Legree should be expected to do so. If he plays in the fall, it means he performed extraordinarily in camp or the players in front of him were very disappointing.
