WBN Nightcap: Kentucky Baseball tries to #SurviveGary

by 4 PM Headlines

I know it’s a day late but how about that baseball game last night? 21 innings with countless crazy plays helping to extend the game. A balked-in run, Senior Catcher Micheal Williams missing  first base during an extra base hit, AJ Reed thrown out at the plate trying to win the game in extra innings. It seemed like it would never end. The game wasn’t televised and I had to “work” last night so I spent most of the night refreshing Kyle Tucker’s Twitter feed (@KyleTucker_CJ). If you don’t follow Kyle , I suggest doing so. Good writer with a sense of humor. He also may have invented #SurviveGary.  First person I saw using it.

Unfortunately the Cats fell 7-6 last night and had several players leave with injuries, including star Luke Maile. The extended game also ate into Kentucky’s bullpen depth.  The good news is that UK bounced back and defeated Valporaiso today behind a strong outing from Jerad Grundy.  They will face the loser of tonight’s Kent State v. Purdue matchup tomorrow. Then the winner if they advance. The Cats have to win out the next 3 games in order to advance to the Super Regional and #SurviveGary.

In football news, Kentucky is still sitting on 1 verbal commitment to the 2013 class but it seems like that could change soon. Camp season is gearing up for the year and the staff has a tendency to get quite a few commits during this time frame. According to a few reports, Georgia ATH Darren Dowdell wanted to commit during last week’s visit but had to return home and get the OK from his father first. It sounds like Dowdell could be commit #2 for Joker Phillips, he could play DE or TE and hails from the same high school as current Wildcat Marcus Caffey.

Another named to watch in the coming months is Georgia WR Tyree Harris. He plans to make his college decision on June 24 and has Kentucky in his top 3. If the name sounds familiar, it’s because Harris has been high on the Cats for several months and was rumored to want to commit in March but was held off by the staff. Neither side has confirmed or denied the story but they rarely do. Kentucky will have to beat out Mississippi State and Clemson for Harris.
