For a school that’s known for having the best freshman in the nation on the basketball team, its a super-frosh baseball player who’s quickly becoming the big man on campus. With Anthony Davis, Michael-Kidd Gilchrist, and Marquis Teague all having departed for the NBA, UK baseball now can make the claim of having the best freshman on campus.
It begins with outfielder/pitcher A.J. Reed. Very rarely do we see players successfully double as both hitters and pitchers in baseball anymore. Reed is an exception, and a mighty fine one.
With his team in the midst of a season-worst 4-game losing streak, he pitched 5.2 shutout innings in his first start since April 10th. While he was shutting down Rebels hitters, he had a career-high 4-for-4 day at the plate with a home-run to give #11 UK a 2-0 win over Ole Miss in the opening game of the SEC tournament. The Bat Cats will now play the winner of the LSU/Mississippi State game on Thursday.
