For seemingly the first time all season, Corey Littrell did “not have it” and as a result, Kentucky was swept by Mississippi State and lost a shot at sharing the SEC Title. Littrell was roughed up for 7 runs in 4.1 innings as Kentucky was trounced 11-3 in the season finale. The loss dropped UK to 41-15 and 18-12 in the SEC. With the loss, Kentucky finished tied with Florida in the SEC East, a half game behind South Carolina. With their win over South Carolina, LSU finished with the best record in the SEC at 19-11. Even with the sweep, Kentucky had destiny in their hands but could not get it done against the Bulldogs today.
Kentucky actually was in good shape early as Kentucky scratched out a couple of unearned runs in the top of the third inning. The Bulldogs countered with three runs in the bottom of the fourth and five more in the bottom of the fifth to put the game out of reach. Up next for Kentucky is the SEC Tournament. They will likely have to play on Tuesday to start the double elimination tournament and we will have the pairings when they are released later. Regardless of what this week, Kentucky is still going to enter postseason play and will have a shot at reaching the College World Series.
