Almost immediately after Kentucky defeated Kansas in the national title game, the debate began of how to honor this team and it’s players.   Depending on who you talked to, the case could be made that certain. Players deserved a banner in the rafters of Rupp for their role in this miraculous season.  I’m not going to ignore the fact that Anthony Davis deserves some kind of individual recognition this year. But then so do Darius Miller, Michael Kidd -Gilchrist and Terrence Jones.

But looking at the banners hanging at Rupp, two things  become obvious.  First, lots of players who deserve banners do not have one hanging at Rupp.   And secondly, there simply is not enough space to honor every individual that deserves recognition.  I have come up with an idea that may solve those problems and keep the basketball purists and the fans alike happy.

The all-time greats do see their jerseys retired BUT since the start of the UK Athletics Hall of Fame, a player has to wait 5 years after leaving UK to be eligible for induction.  After that, it’s a 10 year wait for their jersey to be retired.  If they had a really successful UK career, they should not have to wait that long for their jersey retirement.
