With tonight’s press conference revealing the decisions about the futures of the Kentucky Wildcats’ starting five, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Terrence Jones, Doron Lamb, and Marquis Teague, the team for next season could take a variety of forms.  The most obvious and most likely outcome of tonight’s press conference would be that all five take their talents to the NBA Draft, forgoing the rest of their time here at Kentucky.  As most certainly every member of Big Blue Nation is hoping, all five could possibly return.  More likely than that, could be a mix between the two, where one or two of the five return for another season.  It is doubtful that anything other than the first possible outcome will happen, but until later tonight when it is official, let’s take a look at the possible rosters for next season.

The best possible outcome of tonight would be the return of all five players.  If that were to happen tonight, next year’s starting lineup would almost definitely be the same as last year’s team.  The starting five, plus the likely contributing players in that scenario would look like this:

  • PG- Marquis Teague
  • SG- Doron Lamb
  • SF- Michael Kidd-Gilchrist
  • PF- Terrence Jones
  • C- Anthony Davis
  • Sub- Nerlens Noel
  • Sub- Alex Poythress
  • Sub- Archie Goodwin
  • Sub- Kyle Wiltjer
  • Sub- Ryan Harrow
  • Sub- Willie Cauley

This team would be one of the best teams, if not the best team, in the history of college basketball.  They would be incredibly deep at all positions, they would shoot lights out, their defense would be better than this season, and they truly wouldn’t have any flaws.  This hypothetical team would have no weak link and would be able to deal with the entire starting five having an off night, and still be able to be one of the best teams in the nation.  However, it is almost 100% unlikely that this outcome will happen, and it would only be foolish for any person to expect it to happen.
