The NFL draft is quickly approaching which means several former Wildcats are working hard to make themselves more desirable to pro teams. Linebacker Danny Trevathan and Hybrid LB Winston Guy remain the only Cats likely to be drafted this year. Opinions on Trevathan seem to vary, he is projected anywhere from the 3rd round to undrafted. Guy is projected round 5 to undrafted. He will need to find a team that falls in love with his size/speed combo, which may not be hard, because in today’s pass-happy NFL you need someone fast enough to cover slot receivers but physical enough to handle tight ends split out. Other former players who are likely to be signed as undrafted free agents include P Ryan Tydlacka, OT Chandler Burden, CB Randall Burden, LB Ronnie Sneed, and WR Matt Roark.
Head coach Joker Phillips had the unfortunate dishonor of being named to Athlon sports 10 worst coaches in college football this season. Frankly I don’t think it is a fair assessment. There are many coaches in much easier conferences with worse records that Joker’s 11-14. Joker also has a bowl appearance. Admittedly his first 2 teams have under-achieved and the bowl streak ended this year. But it was going to end some time, there was a time not long ago that a 5-7 season with a win over Tennessee would have earned a coach a contract extension. Speaking of which, Joker won’t get much credit outside the Commonwealth for this, but he has ended 2 of the 3 embarrassing streaks. And when recruiting is factored in, there just isn’t much of a case for this argument.
