Breaking: John Calipari to meet with Alex Oriakhi about transfer to Kentucky

Mar 15, 2012; Louisville, KY, USA; Connecticut Huskies forward/center Alex Oriakhi (34) shoots against Iowa State Cyclones forward Royce White (30) during the first half in the second round of the 2012 NCAA men

CBSSports.com reporter Jeff Goodman Tweeted that John Calipari will meet with former UConn big man Alex Oriakhi today about transferring to Kentucky. As we know, Oriakhi is upset with Jim Calhoun and how he runs things for the Huskies. The team is broiled in controversy and sanctions.

The big road block in the way of this happening is that the SEC does not usually allow one year transfers. Oriakhi’s case could be presented to the SEC and they have the decision to allow him to come to an SEC school if he so chooses.

Alex is transferring mainly because of the NCAA banning the Huskies from the 2013 tournament due to sub-par academics. He is carrying a 3.6 GPA and will not have to sit out a season as is usual with a transfer.

More on this as it develops.

I really don’t understand how he can end up at Kentucky or Missouri.  With the way the transfer rules are he would need to apply for a academic transfer.  Everybody knows this is a basketball related transfer.  Based on that I think he ends up at Duke or Carolina.

I don’t see why the rules would allow a transfer to Duke or UNC and not UK or Mizzou …. the only thing barring him from the SEC is a SEC rule against one year transfers …. and I would assume that that is being worked on or Calipari would not spend the time recruiting….

It is basketball related, but no NCAA next year for UConn means he can transfer without waiting.  To be honest, I have had four or five different breakdowns of the rules and no one seems to know but it will sort itself out.

If the rumors are true that Noel and Oriakhi want to play together, Kentucky is the only suitor that can take him because Oriakhi can’t transfer to a BE school.  It will play itself out however

If there is a way the NCAA can shaft KY they will.  You know it just killed the NCAA Prez to have to present that Big Nat.Champ. Trophy to Coach Cal and the team.
