So Kentucky made it official this week, Mike Cassity is their new defensive backs coach. Cassity hit the recruiting trail immediately and it would seem his impact is already being felt. Georgia corner Shawn Blaylock, a current UK commit, took to twitter to express his pleasure with “Coach Cass”. Coach Cassity is known as an excellent recruiter. In addition to Blaylock, Kentucky has taken the lead for Middletown, Ohio CB Cody Quinn. Quinn has scholarship offers from half the BIG10 and several Big East schools and is on record saying that Mike Cassity is the reason for his interest. Cassity was recruiting Quinn while at Marshall this season. All indications point to the fact that the staff is hitting the recruiting trail hard trying to secure a 2nd straight solid class. Should be interesting down the stretch as Coach Phillips annually inks a guy that nobody knew we were recruiting.
In other pigskin news, 2011 signee WR Nile Daniel, a 3-star prospect, will enroll in a junior college in hopes of signing with Kentucky in two years. Daniel was academically ineligible to start the season but was hoping to qualify in order to greyshirt. Daniel reportedly couldn’t get a qualifying score on the ACT in order to enroll. He joins Bubba Tandy and David Washington as touted 2011 recruits who went to JUCO after not qualifying.
John Calipari and the basketball team opened SEC play today with a 79-64 victory over the South Carolina Gamecocks coached by Kentuckian Darrin Horn. Terrence Jones made appearance, leading the team with 20 points. Teague was close behind with 17. The game was close for a while before the Cats pulled away to a comfortable halftime lead and never looked back.
And finally I want to wish a very Happy Birthday to UK alum Jeremy McFarland. His hair may be red but he certainly bleeds blue.
