Inside The Numbers: AP Top 5 Entering SEC Play


On Saturday, January 7th the Kentucky Wildcats will open their 79th season of playing SEC basketball against the South Carolina Gamecocks at Rupp Arena. Kentucky will also be entering SEC play this season with a #2 ranking the most recent AP Poll. Since the current 16-game SEC scheduling format, which started in the 1991-1992 season, this will be the 6th time that UK has entered SEC play ranked in the top 5 of the AP Poll. Here’s how Kentucky fared in the first 5 occurrences:

1992-1993

  • Entered SEC play ranked #2 in the AP Poll
  • Finished SEC play with a 13-3 record (2nd in the SEC East, Vanderbilt finished 1st)
  • Lost to Arkansas, Tennessee, and Vanderbilt
  • Won the SEC Tournament
  • Final Four appearance in the NCAA Tournament

1993-1994

  • Entered SEC play ranked #4 in the AP Poll
  • Finished SEC play with a 12-4 record (tied for 1st in the SEC East with Florida)
  • Lost to Arkansas, Florida, Georgia, and South Carolina
  • Won the SEC Tournament
  • 2nd Round appearance in the NCAA Tournament

1995-1996

  • Entered SEC play ranked #2 in the AP Poll

  • Lost to Mississippi State in the SEC Tournament finals
  • Won the NCAA Tournament national championship

1996-1997

  • Entered SEC play ranked #3 in the AP Poll
  • Finished SEC play with a 13-3 record (2nd in the SEC East, South Carolina finished 1st)
  • Lost to Ole Miss and South Carolina twice
  • Won the SEC Tournament
  • Lost in the NCAA Tournament national championship game

2009-2010

  • Entered SEC play ranked #3 in the AP Poll
  • Finished SEC play with a 14-2 record (1st in the SEC East)
  • Lost to South Carolina and Tennessee
  • Won the SEC Tournament
  • Elite Eight appearance in the NCAA Tournament
